Healing etc.

I have been listening to some (well intentioned) preachers lately who have been talking about how God desires for his for his children to receive healing from ailments and deliverance from addictions. I believe this, but in my spirit, I really struggle with this concept.

I have listened to many stories of the blind seeing, the deaf hearing, and drug addicts and alcoholics being completely set free from the chains of those addictions.

The reason I struggle is because my child has cerebral palsy. I have earnestly prayed for God to heal him. I have great faith that He can do this, yet my son is not healed. He still has cerebral palsy, and likely he will for the rest of his life despite my earnest and fervent prayer.

Then, there is the misconception that anyone who is an addict is instantly freed from the from addiction at the moment of conversion simply by the power of Christ. While this does happen, this certainly is not the case for everyone.

I was speaking to my doctor about my health, and I told him that my health issues and my spiritual issues are intertwined, and he gave me some very wise advice. He told me that "Like Paul (in the bible- who had a thorn in the flesh that he prayed God would take away) God did not do that. God used that thorn to remind Paul that "My Grace is sufficient for you!"

I am learning that God's grace is sufficient through my struggles, and with my son, I believe that God can use him in spite of his cerebral palsy. As far as addictions are concerned, I know some wonderful Christian people that really love the Lord and they smoke, but that does not define them, or demean their Christian experience, they are still loved by God.

In all of this, I am just sharing my opinion, and you are free to have your opinion too, but I just wanted to give you a snapshot of where I am at. Be sure to question and think about the messages that you hear, talk to God, and develop your own opinions, and if you are unsure, ask other Christians and read the word- this is how you start to grow in your faith- and oh what an adventure it can be!

Blessings!

Melanie

  1. God is wonderful and full of mercy. God has healed me saved me from terrible harm and I thank him everyday for the things he has given me, and done for me. His plan for us, is his plan and there is no way that we can change the outcome. Faith alone is the way to live in this world with all that is happening. Love him with all your heart and he will get us thru the future. Bless you sweetheart
